Is Faith an Alternative for Action?

The word “Faith” has been abused, misunderstood and mystified. Consequently, most people who claim to have faith do not really understand what faith actually means. I find it very imperative to share my thoughts about this topic because some people have misunderstood what faith actually means to the extent that they try to excuse themselves from acting in the name of faith. I wonder where they got this idea from. Faith is not complete without action. There is no controversy about it, faith is not and will never be an alternative for action. In fact, action is an indispensable part of what I call effective faith. The words of God categorically confirm the fact that faith without works is dead.

“For as the body without the spirit is dead so faith without works is dead also” (James 2:26)

Faith Without Action is Nothing

I believe you all agree with me that another word that can replace ”work” in the Bible verse above is ”action.” Faith has three components. These components are: Believing, Confession and Action. However, most people exercise their faith only by believing and confession. They ignore the action part which is the most important part of an effective faith.

Now let me proof to you with a mathematical equation that ”Faith without works is dead.” By combining all the three components of faith I gave you above together we can arrive at the equation below. I call this equation the Effective Faith Equation.

Faith = (Believing + Confession)* Action

From our elementary mathematics we all know that any figure no matter how big multiplied by zero is nothing but zero. One billion multiply by zero gives you zero. One trillion multiply by zero gives you nothing but zero. So if the way you demonstrate your faith is only by believing and confessing, then there is a very serious problem. Do you know why? Let us assume you have one billion units of believe plus one billion units of confession the whole thing results to nothing if you have zero unit of action. In that case, your faith equation looks like this:

Faith = (1billion believe + 1billion confessions)* 0 action

And since anything multiplied by zero equals zero, then, your faith equation becomes:

Faith = Zero

I hope you can now see clearly that faith without action is dead. It is nothing but zero. It is an ineffective faith! When something is dead, it becomes ineffective.

My question to you now is this: which kind of faith is yours? Is it the effective one that is backed by strong action? Is it the ineffective one that is devoid of action?

Faith does not excuse you from work

Whichever type of faith you currently practice, I want you to remember that faith does not excuse you from work. In fact, there is no better way to demonstrate your faith to both man and God than by acting base on it. Your action is the strongest proof or demonstration of your faith. It shows you are willing to play your part by giving it all it takes. Let me illustrate my point with examples in the Bible.

When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, ”Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” But Simon answered and said to Him, ”Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at your word I will let down the net.” And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.”  (Luke 5: 4-7)

Do you think Simon would have gotten that fantastic result if he had only exercise his faith in Jesus by only believing and confessing that ”I can do all things in Christ Jesus who strengthens me”? Or ”with God all things are possible.” Yes personally, I strongly believe that with God all things are possible but only for those who are willing to back their faith with necessary actions. Simon got an outstanding result by demonstrating his faith with action, even though the instruction from Jesus did not make sense to him.

Let us look at another case in the Bible when Jesus healed a man with withered right hand.

“…He said to the man, ”Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored as a whole as the other.” (Luke 6:10)

Can you see that when the man was asked to stretch out his hand he demonstrated his faith in Jesus ability to heal him by action? It is recorded in the Bible that he did so, that is he made the effort to stretch forth his hand and he was healed in the process.

The important point I want you to get in all these is simple: effective faith, faith that produces result is not passive; it is rather active.

How to Experience Positive Transformation 3

This week I am going to conclude the series on how to experience positive transformation by discussing the last two components of positive transformation – Decision and Action.

Once you are dissatisfied with the status quo, the anger and the hatred with the prevailing situation couple with the right mental model will help you to take the right decision and follow it with the right action that will propel you in the right direction. And you know what? Your decision today determines your reality tomorrow. You will not experience any meaningful desirable transformation until you decide what exactly you want.

It is good that you are dissatisfied with the current situation, but in addition to this, you must decide what exactly you want or where exactly you want to be. If you don’t have an idea of what you want or where you want to be and you are dissatisfied with your current position, most likely you will end up in another undesirable situation. For example, if you are not happy coping with Lagos traffic and other problems that come with residing in Lagos, the first thing you need to do is to decide what exactly you want your ideal city of residence to look like. Then you can identify cities and towns that meet your requirements and decide which of them you want to live in.

Let us look at another example. If you are not happy with your current financial status, the first thing you must do is to decide the level at which you want to play. This will give you an idea of what you must do to earn the kind of money you want.

Your decision gives you ideas of what you need to do, how you need to do them and when you need to do them to get to your desirable destination in life. Simply, your decision guides your actions to make what your desire a reality.

Your decision gives you ideas of what you need to do to bring about the desired transformation. But for the transformation to become a reality in your life, you must ACT. Ideas are powerful but only when they are acted upon. There can be no changes or transformation without ACTION. Isaac Newton, one of the greatest scientist to live on the face of planet earth stated in his first law of motion that:

Every object remains in its state of rest or uniform motion unless it is acted upon by a force

This law does not only apply to objects, it also applies to several other areas of our lives. Therefore, I am going to restate the law as: “Everything including an undesirable situation remains the way they are unless you act” For instance, if you put a cup on your dining table, it will remain in the same spot on the table unless you, somebody else or something move it away. Similarly, if you are in a situation you don’t like, you must do something about it to change the situation. The critical message in this law is that there can be no transformation unless you act.

In conclusion, I want you always remember that:

Transformation = Dissatisfaction + Mindset Change + Decision + Action

All these components must be present for you to experience positive transformation from where you are now to where you want to be.

How to Experience Positive Transformation 2

Mindset Change

This series started two weeks ago when I posted the first part. This week I am going to continue with second part by taking a look at another very important component of transformation – Mindset Change. Mindset change means change of mental model. It means renewing of your mind. It involves dropping your age long believes and traditions and looking for better ways of doing things.

It is written in the Bible that:

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” Romance 12:2

You cannot experience positive transformation until your mental model is changed. Even with dissatisfaction, you will not experience transformation unless there is a change of mindset. You know why, your mindset determines how you think. And your thinking determines who you are. That is why is written in the Bible:

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he” Proverbs 23:7

When you are dissatisfied with status quo but you still move around with your old mindset (that is your old way of thinking) what you will get is frustration not transformation.

Renewing of your mindset is a very vital component for you to experience transformation. There are several people out there who are dissatisfied with their current situations but find it difficult to experience transformation just because they still have their old mindset. You cannot put new wine inside old wineskin. The renewing of your mind gives you the capacity and the discipline to take the right decision and follow it with the right action that will transform into the reality you desire.

How Do you Renew your mind?

You can renew your mind through meditation. This involves meditating on the words of God.

It is written in Josuha1:8 that:

This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your ways prosperous, and then you will have good success

Meditating on words of God will renew your mind, help you to do the right thing and consequently experience transformation from where you are to where you desire to be. What you need to do is to look for the scriptures that relate to a particular issue of your life you want to change. Meditate on it until you get the understanding of the word. The understanding will give you the revelation of what to do to address the issue at hand.

Another means of renewing your mind is by meditating on positive thoughts of whatever you want to achieve in live. I said it earlier, meditation gives you understanding which gives you the revelation or ideas on how to deal successfully with the issue at hand.

Before I move to the next point, let me make it clear to you that meditation is not worrying. However, if you know how to worry, you already know how to meditate. Worrying is simply a negative form of meditation. On the other hand, meditation is pondering on, thinking about or turning an issue over in your mind until you get understanding which unravels the solution to the issue.

Change Your Words

Another thing you need to do to change your mindset is to change your words. Change all your negative confession to positive ones. Always say what you want. Whatever you say enters your hear. And don’t forget that faith cometh by hearing. What you say to yourself increases your faith, your faith increases your level of confidence, your level of confidence affects you decision and actions and your decision and subsequent actions determine your reality in life. Words are very powerful. For you to understanding how important and powerful your words are, go and read the book of Genesis 1:1.24 in the Bible. You will notice that God spoke everything He created into existence. God created everything by His words. And considering the fact that we were created in the image of God and in His own likeness, it can reasonably and logically concluded that we have the same capacity like God to speak whatever we desire in our life to existence. But let me warn you, this principle is a two edged sword. You can speak both negative and positive situation into existence in your life. If you speak negative words, you create negative circumstance in your life. And if you speak positive words you create positive circumstance in your life. So you must be mindful of what you confess with your mouth.

Be mindful of your associations

Birds of the same feather they say flock together. Show me your friends and I can tell who you are. The people you associate with influence where you go, what you see, what you hear and your words. Where you go influences what you see and hear. What you see and hear consistently enters your mind. And whatever enters your mind influences your confession, that is, your words. You know why? Out of the abundance of the mind the mouth speaks. If you want to be wealthy and all your intimate friends are even poorer than you I am sorry to say this you are not going anywhere.

Be mindful of information you feed your mind with

Information is a very powerful programming language for your mind. Information has the power to influence your thinking. And don’t forget that your thinking determines what you ultimately become.

There are two major ways we can feed our mind with information. Number one is by seeing and number two is by hearing. Collectively seeing and hearing a significant proportion of what we learn. What you see and hear shapes your thoughts. In fact, research has shown that 89% of what we learn and do are what we see. Advertisers exploit this principle by bombarding us every minute with the sounds and images of what they want you to buy.

Seek Knowledge and Understanding

If you are really desirous of change from where you are to where you want to be, you must seek knowledge diligently all your life. One of the ways to get knowledge is by reading books. Most people have not read a single book since they left school, while some people only read when they have examinations to write. This is not the kind of reading I am talking about, what I mean is reading for knowledge. Someone said readers are leaders. Also, it is written in the Bible that:

“…ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free” (John 8:32)

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…” (Hosea 4:6)

I want you to look at John 8:32 critically again. Knowing the truth, that is knowledge, will lift the veil from your eyes and consequently become a new being with capacity to tackle issues you had hitherto been running away from.

Understanding helps you to reap the benefits of knowledge. That is, it gives you the insight about knowledge such that you can apply it to real life issues. Knowledge and understanding turns you into a new being by reducing your level of ignorant and foolishness.

How to Experience Positive Transformation 1

Over the next three weeks we are going to be discussing how to experience positive transformation. This is a very crucial topic which has a serious impact on how we live our lives. Hence, it is very important to pay serious attention to it.

Transformation simply means Change. Transformation is an indispensable requirement for growth and development. However, it is very vital to note that you cannot experience real transformation unless you abandon the status quo. Change means doing things differently. You cannot be doing things the way you have been doing them and expect a different result. It is not only unrealistic, but absolutely impossible. That is why Zig Ziglar said that: “doing things the way we have always done them and expect a different result is one of definitions of insanity

Transformation has four components. And for transformation to take place, all the four components must be present. The components are: DISSATISFACTION, MINDSET CHANGE, DECISION and ACTION. In order to simplify this subject, I am going to express transformation in mathematical equation as follows:

Transformation = Dissatisfaction + Mindset Change + Decision + Action

Please note that if any of these components are missing you cannot experience positive transformation.

Now, let us take each of these components and discuss them one by one.

The first one I am going to discuss is dissatisfaction. When I say dissatisfaction, I mean dissatisfaction with the status quo. And most of the time the status quo is usually our comfort zone. That is why people naturally resist change and will do whatever they can to stop it. Dissatisfaction is a critical step in the process of transformation. If you are not dissatisfied with the status quo, there will be no drive for change. Even when you have the right mindset, if you are happy with the current situations, you will not see any need to take decision and actions necessary for transformation.

You will notice in the Bible that after God created the heavens and the earth, He was dissatisfied with the way the earth was. Though this fact was not categorically stated in the Bible, but if you carefully read the first two verses of the book of Genesis Chapter one and link them to the subsequent actions performed by God, you will clearly understand that God was dissatisfied with the way things were.

Let us take a look at the passage:

1In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.2And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep…  3And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.  6And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.  9And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so…. (From Genesis 1)

From the passages of the Bible above, it is pretty obvious that God was dissatisfied with the way things were on the earth. That is why he caused the changes we see in Gen1:3-24 to happen. For example, God was not happy with darkness, He created light. He was dissatisfied with disorderliness; He made things to be in order.

Wish does not bring Change

I want you to understand that wish does not bring change, only dissatisfaction does. For instance, one of the major reasons Nigeria is the way it is today is that bulk of Nigerians including our leaders are not truly dissatisfied with situations of things in the country. Even though we all wish the country is better, we are not are not truly dissatisfied.

The same thing applies to our personal lives as individuals. Most of us are wishing seriously to get better in various aspects of our lives. However, things are not going according to our wish. We keep on wondering why things remain the same or probably getting worse even though we have been wishing for change for years. If you are experiencing such a situation, things have not changed for the better because you have only been wishing but you are not dissatisfied with the current situation. When someone is truly dissatisfied with a situation or something, he will be ready to give or sacrifice whatever it takes to change the situation.

Dissatisfaction with the status quo will help you to break the resistance to change. That is why dissatisfaction with the status quo is a vital requirement for transformation. Dissatisfaction creates a burning anger in you. The anger will make it impossible for you to put-up with the undesirable situation. This anger gives you the push, the urge and the courage to move out of your comfort zone to act. You will agree with me that when you are angry, you are more likely to dare things you are ordinarily afraid of. Anger will drive you to look for the better alternative. And in the process, things begin to get better and you experience positive transformation.

Human life cycle

The process of human transformation from living an ordinary life to a successful and impactful life follows a cycle. This cycle is similar to the insect life cycle.

Insects know the time for change and metamorphosized from crawling to flying.

On the other hand, man who was blessed by God to have dominion finds it difficult to recognize the time for change or truncate the process along the line before it is concluded. Consequently, we remain crawling on the ground forever instead of flying. The Big Question is: Are insects more intelligent than man? Of course they are not! Saying insect are more intelligent than man is very far from the truth, because among all the things created by God it was only man who He actually created in His own image. The fact that man was created in the image of God and was also blessed by Him to have dominion clearly shows we are superior and more intelligent than any other living things created by Him. So, if we are more intelligent than insects, why do people truncate their life transformation process? They do so because of FEAR.

Dissatisfaction and Fear

Every human being has the emotion called fear. For you to have the courage to move out of your comfort zone, your dissatisfaction level must be greater than your fear level. That is, your level of dissatisfaction must be strong enough to suppress every element of fear in you. You need a very high level of dissatisfaction to gather sufficient courage to overcome your fear and act. In fact, your courage to act is directly proportional to your level of dissatisfaction. I believe you understand the implication of this; you must be willing to confront your fear to experience positive transformation.

Making Financial Freedom your Reality

Who wants to be a billionaire? Obviously we all want to be rich. However this goal elude majority of the people because they carry wrong ideas about money in their mind. These wrong ideas keep most people from realizing the goal of becoming rich despite the fact that they pursue it all their lives. Since wrong ideas about money are the obstacle between people and their life goal of becoming wealthy, let us look at these ideas.

Wrong Ideas about money

  • Wealth is money – this is a fallacy, wealth is not money. Rather wealth is value. You are only as wealthy as the value you possess or can render.
  • The more money I earn the wealthier I become – this is equally wrong. Most people ignorantly equate wealth to the quantity of money they have access to or the size of their income. So they work very hard to earn more money. They believe wrongly that the more money they earn, the stronger their financial strength. This is a very wrong assumption. It is not how much you earn that matters but how much of it you are able to turn into assets that will work hard to bring money into your pocket. How much of your current income you can convert to value generating assets is what determine your financial strength. We all know of sport stars who were financially buoyant while they were playing but latter find it difficult to take care of themselves when they stop playing. Also, we have several people who won millions of dollars but became pauper just few years down the line.
  • You need money to make money – this is not true, you don’t need money to create money, you only need an idea. If you have a very good value creating idea and package it well, you will attract all the money you need in the world.
  • Money is root of evil – No, this incorrect money is not the root of all evil. It is the love of money that is the root evil. It is the lack of money, poverty that is the root of evil. Homelessness is the root of evil. Hunger is the root of evil.

The Big Lessons

It is very clear from the last section that:

  • Money alone does not solve financial problem
  • Hard work alone does not solve financial problem. There are several hardworking people who earn big money but are deep in debt
  • Education does not solve financial problem
  • Securing highly paying job does not solve financial problem

Then, what can solve peoples’ financial problem?

This is very simple, it is your financial knowledge. Most of us are educated but we don’t have the required financial intelligence to deal with our financial issues. Your financial intelligence will help you to address the root cause of whatever financial problem you encounter in life. It is pretty obvious now that the root cause of financial problem is the lack of financial education. So it is very important that this should be promptly addressed.

Types of Education

Academic education – This teaches us how to read, write and do addition and subtraction

Professional Education – This teaches us how to work for money. It equips people with skills to become more employable. It helps you to enjoy financial security.

Financial Education – This teaches us how to be financially free. It equips you with the skills you need to make your money work you rather than you working for money. This type of education is not covered in our school curriculums.

Financial Education

The first two types of education are appropriately covered in our school curriculums. Therefore, the rest of this course will focus on financial education. Let us start today our financial education by looking at the definitions of some important words in personal finance.

Money – Contrary to the wrong popular opinion, money is not wealth. Money is a measure of value as well as a means of exchanging value. The fact that money is just a measure of value was made clear to us in our O’ level economic class. There we learnt trade by barter, a system that was introduced before the advent of money. Then if you go to market you exchange anything of value you are holding with another item of value that you need. The same basic principle of exchange still applies today with the use of money. Money was introduced to make exchange of values less cumbersome and more convenient. During the era of barter trade if you go to market, and you don’t have anything of value to offer, you come back empty handed. The only other way you can get anything from the market is either by begging or stealing. Similarly, in this era of money, if you don’t have anything of value to offer, you cannot earn a kobo unless by begging or stealing.

Value – This is any item or resource which has economic benefit.

Asset – this is anything that put money into your pocket

Liability – Anything that takes money out of your pocket

Value Creation Strategies

We have seen that your ability to attract money depends solely on your capacity to create value. You capacity to create value is determined by the strategy you employ in creating value. There are four types of strategies which can be adopted in creating value. Let us look at them one by one:

Physical (Bodily) Technique – Another name for this method is work and eat. If you are an employee, you are in this category. If you are a business owner who must always be around for the business to function, you are in this category. The major issue with this approach is that as you grow older an older, you will get to a point where your capacity to create value begins to decline. So you will get to a point where you will no longer be able to meet your financial needs. A more serious scenario is where somebody is incapacitated by sickness or accident. Someone in this situation will have to rely on handouts to survive. This can be a very bitter experience.

Systemic (Pipeline) Technique – This is a very organized method that combines human, process and material to create value. This technique leads to transformation from someone who earn from his own labour to someone who draw dividend from earnings of his assets.

Intellectual Technique – This an method where intellectual assets are skillfully employed to create value. A good example of this is by writing a book.

Investment Technique – Here, you employ your money to buy assets which create value.

Eight Rules of Financial Success

  1. Be mindful of your Association
  2. Have a financial plan
  3. Live below your means to increase your means
  4. Pay yourself first
  5. Make your money work for you
  6. Let your asset pay for your liability
  7. Consistently increase your earning capacity
  8. Develop multiple Streams of income

Purpose-Driven Leadership

Leadership is ability to influence others to works towards the achievement of a specific purpose. In this presentation, I will like to explain leadership with the concept I describe as the Leadership Equation. From the definition of leadership above, it is clear that the ultimate goal of leadership is to achieve a defined purpose. Therefore we can say that:

However, in the real life, we know that a leader cannot achieve this purpose alone. So there is the need to introduce an enabling factor into the leadership equation. And that enabling and indispensable factor is people. By introducing people factor the leadership equation becomes:

The question that comes to mind now is this, does it mean we can achieve our desired purpose just by bringing a leader and people together? The answer of course is no. If it is possible to achieve a purpose by bringing leader and people together, every organization and nation will be successful. And we all know it is not every organization that is successful. And likewise, it is not every nation that is successful. So if that is the case, it means there is a very important factor that is missing in the leadership equation. That important factor is “influence.” So the leadership equation will now look like this:

Now from here, we can define leadership as ability to influence people to achieve a defined purpose. From this definition and considering the fact that a purpose cannot be achieved by just combining a leader and people, it is very obvious that influence is a very vital requirement for successful leadership. Therefore, it will be nice for us to look at how leaders attempt to influence their followers to achieve their defined purpose.

How to gain Influence

Actually, there are two major means through which somebody can influence others to achieve his objective or purpose. The first one is the Positional Approach (Armed Robber’s Approach) the second one is Trust and Respect Approach.

Positional Approach (Armed Robber’s Approach)

This is a situation where the leader depends solely on the power of his position to influence people. This is the lowest level of leadership. John Maxwell, the leadership guru confirms this in his book, Developing the Leader Within you. In this book he categorized leaders into five groups in what he calls “The Five Levels of Leadership.” The lowest level of leadership according to his categorization is leadership by position. Ironically, in Africa most people who occupy top leadership position in both corporate and public are on the lowest level of leadership development process. This probably explains why it is difficult to find organizations who outlived their founders and why nearly all the countries in Africa are underdeveloped despite the presence abundant mineral resources.

Leaders on this level earn their influence by instilling fear of punishment in people. Such leader adopt carrot and stick approach only. They rely solely on their position to force people to dance to their tune. Really people in this category are not leaders; they are at best can be referred to as managers.

This approach is similar to armed robbers’ tactics. Armed robbers use their position of possessing a gun or other dangerous weapons to get people do what they want. When a robber put a gun on my head, at that point he has the POWER to influence me to do whatever he wants me to do. That is why somebody defined power as the ability of A to make B do what B ordinarily would not do. Leadership is neither power nor position but influence. John Maxwell, one of the prominent leadership gurus said, “A position does not make you a leader, it only gives you the opportunity to lead.”

If you influence people solely through fear, it means people follow you because of the power you have as a result of your position. Then, the big question is what happens when you are no longer in that position? What do you think will happen if the gun is taken away from you? What do you think will happen to your sphere of influence if you are no longer in position to control the carrot and the stick? Will people still follow you? I can bet it with you, just like an armed robber who is dispossessed of his weapon, you will suddenly become powerless without your position and lose all your influence. If you operate this strategy, always remember that any position you occupy today is not going to be forever. Nothing except change is constant in this world. One day the inevitable will happen, the forces of change will manifest themselves and you either live the position or the position will be taken away from you.

This approach has a lot of inherent problems when it is adopted by a leader in corporate world. Notable among the problems are:

It is not enduring – The approach cannot stand the test of time. When you depend on this approach, your ability to influence people is strictly tied to your position. So when you lose the position your capacity to influence disapears.

It is not cost effective – When you gain people’s influence through fear, people follow you only because of salary or money you pay them. Your capacity to influence people depend on money or other material things you can offer them. When you get people to work solely because of material reward, you can never get the best out of them. What you have is just a bunch of uncommitted people who are ready to jump out at any time the competition offers higher price. The implication of this is that you can only retain your good hands by constantly increasing their pay.

Low staff morale, and lack dedication – Leaders of organisations who employ fear to gain the influence of their employees end up with bunch of highly disgruntled staff. Such situation leads low productivity.

High staff turnover – Disgruntled staff are not only less productive, they are also busy looking for slightest opportunity to jump on board with any of the competitors. And we should not forget that high staff turnover has negative impact on productivity and profitability.

It cannot work in a voluntary organization setting – This approach cannot work in a voluntary organization where people are not paid to do the work. In such scenarios people follow the leader majorly because of the respect they have for the leader.

Trust and Respect Approach

Having highlighted the drawbacks of influencing people through fear, let us examine the alternative approach. That is, influencing people to achieve a given purpose because of the trust and respect they have for you. This is a leadership style where people are influence to do whatever is necessary to achieve a set purpose when they don’t have to do it. When you operate at this level, the influence is coming majorly because of trust and the respect people have for you and not out of fear of punishment. What this means essentially is that you are not necessarily a leader just because you occupy a position. The effectiveness of your leadership ability is a function of level of the trust and respect people have for you and not the level of fear they have for you. When you operate at this realm, you become better and more productive with relatively minimal cost.

This approach employs the 3Cs of leadership to influence people. The 3Cs of leadership are:

  • Character      – This is needed for a leader to earn people’s trust. People will never      trust a leader with character flaw.
  • Competence      – This is required for a leader to earn respect. There is no way people      can respect somebody who does not know his job.
  • Courage –      The ability to act when things are tough is an indispensable trait a      leader must have to command the respect of his people.

Now someone might be wondering, how do I earn the trust and respect of other people? So let us examine how this can be done.

How to Earn people’s Trust

Trust is not automatic, it has to be earned. John Maxwell said, “Trust is not given nor can it be assumed simply because you have leadership position with others. Trust has to be earned and it usually comes when you are tested.” Let me illustrate this with a very simple but common scenario. If a child is chastised by his mother, he seldom holds it against her. But if the same child is staying with an uncle if the uncle’s wife chastises him, most likely he will hold it against her for a very long time.  What do you think is the difference between the two situations? It is just a matter of trust. In the first case, the boy believes the mum was acting in his best interest, hence he trusts the mum. But in the other case he does not trust the uncle’s wife so he does not believe the woman could be acting in his best interest. As a leader, you can earn people’s trust through the following means.

  • Be committed to the people. Be genuinely interested in them. Tend to people and they will tend to the business with all their hearts. As a leader, if you focus only on the business, most likely you end up losing the people and the business. But if you focus on people, you develop the people and inevitably grow the business.
  • Build relationship with your people. Leadership is people business. As a leader you cannot lead the building and equipment you have in there. You need people to man the building and equipment to achieve your goal. People -human resources is an indispensable factor of production whether you like it or not. And unlike other factors of production they have feelings and emotions. Your relationship with your people determines their emotion towards you. If you have positive relationship with them, they will have positive emotions towards you and consequently trust you. As a result they will be willing to follow you. But if you have negative relationship with them, they will have negative emotions towards you and the level of trust will be very low if at all there is any.
  • Positive Character Traits: You need positive character traits such as integrity, self-discipline. Integrity – Doing the right thing whether you are being monitored or not. You must be consistently honest. Self-discipline – Doing the right thing whether it is convenient or not. Your decisions should be based on principles. Your actions should be in alignment with the organization’s core ideology. The      core ideology is the organization’s purpose and core values. We are going  to look at this in greater details later.

How to Earn Respect from People

Leaders don’t demand respect, rather they earn it. Margret Thatcher, the former Prime Minister of Great Britain said that: “if a woman has to announce to people that she is a woman before we know it, she is probably not a woman.” Similarly, if a leader has to demand for respect from his people, he is surely not a leader. People will naturally respect you when you have the following traits:

  • Competence      – Problem solving capacity
  • Courage –      ability to stand-up to challenges

Are You Prepared for the Global Economic Meltdown?

Someone said “always prepare for the bad days and you will only know the good days.” If you have the illusion that the global economic meltdown is over, you need to have a rethink of your position and wake-up to the reality. USA, the world economic superpower credit rating was downgraded recently by S&P. Spain, Italy and Portugal credit ratings were also downgraded. And if you have been following the news, you will realize that Greek economy is on the brink of collapse.

With the globalization no country of the world is immune from the effect of the global economic meltdown. If the developed economies are feeling the impact so hard, it’s just a matter of time the more serious impact will be felt in developing countries.

The question now is: are you prepared to deal with and survive the negative impact of the global economic crash? Don’t forget that unlike developed countries where the governments often come to the aid of their citizens, being a citizen of a developing economy, you are always on your own (OYO). There is no bailout for you. Your financial destiny is in your hands. It is not the hands of the government, neither is it in the hands of your employers who will equally be looking for bailout. That is if they have not started seeking for aid already, Greece is a real life example. Considering this fact, the question you should ask yourself is: how long can you survive without your paid employment? And if you are a business owner, can your business survive the ripple effect of mass unemployment?

Once again; how prepared are you? I want you to remember the quote I started with “always prepare for the bad days and you will only know the good days.” You need to start preparing for the bad financial days now so that you will only know the good financial days. The preparation goes beyond just saving money; don’t forget that you can only access your money if only your bank survive the meltdown. Capital market investment will only help only if the company you invested in also survives the impending economic crises. People who invested in the recently nationalized banks or companies whose stocks were delisted will understand what I am talking about.

Now, the obvious fact is that the traditional approach to our personal finance cannot work in the new world order. You need a change of strategy not only to survive during crisis but also to secure financial freedom. You need to know the secret of the rich which are not taught in schools and are jealously kept by the rich.

In the new world order, the first rule of financial freedom is APPLIED KNOWLEDGE.
