Research has shown that if you take hundred men who start even at the age of twenty five, by the time they are 65 one will be rich, four will be financially independent, five will still be working, and fifty four will be broke. This implies that only 5 out of every 100 people end up being successful in life. Now the questions that come to mind are: Why is it that only 5 out of 100 people end up living their dreams in life? Why is life full of struggle for most people in our world? Why is it that only very few people actually live a life of impact? The answer is very simple, only 5 out of 100 know why they are in this world. While the remaining 95 spend their lives without finding out what their life purpose is. For the sake of clarity, your life purpose is the reason why you are here in this world. It is your life assignment! Your life purpose is that thing which you are meant to contribute to impact the world and make it a better place. It is that thing you were created by God to donate to our world. Simply put, your life purpose is the problem you are here to solve for humanity. Usually, your life purpose goes beyond you and is far greater than you. In his book “Purpose Driven Life” Rick Warren said, “Your life is too small to be the purpose of your life.” The statement implies that if your thoughts are just about you and you and you only, you are probably not working in line with your life purpose. Making yourself the center of your thoughts is self-centeredness which places serious limitation on your capacity to succeed in life.
It’s Time to Discover your purpose
Are you in this world just to provide for yourself and your family? This surely won’t be your life purpose because your life is too small to be the purpose of your life. Where the purpose of anything is not known, its abuse is inevitable. Similarly, if you fail to identify you life purpose, you end up being abused and helping others to serve their life purpose. I am sorry to say this, this is the reality of most people on paid employment today; people wake up every day going to perform a mundane work helping their employers to realize their vision and serve their purpose. I am not saying it is totally bad to work as an employee, it may be necessary at times to gain some skills and resources which will help you in serving your life purpose. However, you need to identify what your life purpose is and have a plan to serve it. It is going be a wasted life if your plan is to be an employee for life.
If you really want to know what your life purpose is, you need to find your own answer to these questions: Why am I in this world? How can I make positive impact in this world? The following clues can help you in figuring out what your life purpose is.
- Find out that thing which you can do exceptionally well.
- Identify what you really enjoy doing.
- What is that thing you are passionate about?
- What is that thing you can do and put in your best even when you are not being paid
Being able to identify any one of these, will give you a direct pointer to why exactly you are in this world. At that point, you need to develop and sharpen your skill in that area to become the best. And more importantly, you need to shift your attention away from self to others. You need a paradigm shift from self-centeredness to other-centeredness. You need to find out how you can use the skill for the benefit of mankind and to the glory of almighty God.
The principle of Sowing and reaping
Every man is created to donate something to humanity. Your life purpose is what you are meant to donate to the humanity. Once you have discovered your life purpose, you need to apply the principle of sowing and reaping to your life. The five percent of people who impact the world and succeed in life understand and apply the principle of sowing and reaping. What exactly do they do? While most people focus on harvest, these people on the other hand focus on sowing. They know that whatever you sow, you shall reap. Therefore, they sow their time and other resources towards serving their purpose to benefit humanity. These few people sow and donate into the world by solving problems and meeting others needs. This strategy ultimately and inevitably generate more than sufficient harvest to take care of their personal needs.
On the contrary, majority of people live their live with the mindset of meeting only their personal needs. This is purely an employee mindset which limits human capacity to solve problems and have great life vision. It is mindboggling when I see people taking up a job mainly because of the size of the paycheck. The skills that could be learnt are not usually a factor that is considered in accepting a job offer. It is just the money to take care of their personal needs that is considered in their decision to accept a job offer or not. That is, their major focus is on the harvest rather than the sowing. Consequently, they toil night and day working for money rather than working to solve problem that can really impact our world. It obviously does not occur to them that they can actually take better care of their needs if they identify their purpose and serve the purpose to make our world a better place. It is a universal fact that for your needs to be met, you need to meet the needs of others. Today, if you are majorly preoccupied with meeting only your needs, you must understand that this kind of mindset leads to nothing but a life who is struggling perpetually to succeed. But I want you to note that there is a better way to live. That better way is to identify your live purpose and serve the purpose for the benefit of humanity and to the glory of God. When you do this, you will reap abundant supply of harvest that is more than sufficient to take care of your needs and ultimately live a better life.
