Most people in the world today especially in Africa are in a state of dormancy. Though they are growing older, their minds have permanently stopped growing. It is very important to note that human beings cannot develop beyond the capacity of their mind, when someone’s mind stops growing he stops growing. This will be manifested by lack of development in every situations of his life. Even when such individual has abundance material resources at his disposal, he will squander them. That explains why there is so much poverty and underdevelopment in Africa despite the presence of abundance mineral resources. We have plenty of natural resources but we are the poorest continent in the world. The reason is simple; our leaders focus more on selfish acquisition of material resources for themselves at the detriment of developing our people. Be that as it may, it is pretty obvious that individually we need to take our destiny into our own hand and do whatever we can to develop our mind. The development of your mind has great influence on your mindset which determines your decisions and consequently your actions. Your actions determine your situation and ultimate destination in life.
Beyond Chronological Age
Let me state it clearly here that the state of dormancy I am referring to has nothing to do with physical movement or increase in chronological age of the people. It’s beyond physical movement and chronological age. After all, we all wake up every day running after something or from one thing or the other. Also, you see people here and there celebrating their birthdays. But as you bless almighty God for adding another year to your life and celebrate the event, do you ever examine yourself to find out if you have actually experience any growth in your mind? The answer for most people is probably NO. Hence, they grow older but never grow up. We have a situation where people are growing in chronological age without corresponding growth of their mind. It is important to understand that the growth of your mind is much more important than the growth in chronological age. Because it determines who you are and what you eventually become in life, a failure or an outstanding success. Therefore, it should be celebrated more than anything else. Focus more on your mind’s growth and development and not the numbers of years you have spent on earth. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States of America said, “I do not think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday.” This statement underscores the importance of growing and developing your mind. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who are even not wiser this year than they were last year. This is a very worrisome situation! Isn’t it?
It’s not How Far but How well?
Always have it at the back of your mind that it is not how far but how well that matters. Jesus Christ lived for only 33 years and His impacts are still resonating all over the world and it will continue like that forever. Contrarily, Methuselah lived for 969 years and that was his only achievement. Obviously he did not make any impact; otherwise it would have been recorded. I should make it clear here that wisdom which is an evidence of how developed your mind is, is not always proportional to your age. Rather, it depends on what you expose your mind to as well as quality of resources you feed your mind with. The illustration of Jesus Christ and Methuselah above is a very good proof of this. If someone really desires to grow up, he must first develop and grow his mind. Growth and development of his mind must be his number one priority. The development of your mind depends largely on how your mind is programmed. There are different means of developing your mind. The most important of them is through positive thinking which I discussed about last week. Hence, activities that stimulate your thinking and imagination will help you to develop your mind. Activities that will help you to learn and acquire new knowledge such as reading, travelling and associating with people with great mind will help you develop your mind. All of them have the tendency to spur your imagination which results in positive thinking and ultimately who you are at the core of your ‘being.’ Growing up is not automatic. It requires deliberate commitment and actions. You must have the desire to grow, take the decision to grow and make efforts to grow and persist in growing. Your watch words should be continuous learning. Someone said, “When you stop learning, you start dying” Take steps to develop your mind and start growing up today! You cannot grow beyond the capacity of your mind. Thank you for reading.
