Fear of Failure

Many people see failure as something very bad consequently; they do whatever they can to avoid it, even when it means remaining on the same spot in life. Such people justify their decision with various excuses. Some people say “a bird at hand worth two in the bush”. Please let me make it clear to you, this statement is very far from the truth. It just creates a mindset which places limitation on your growth and achievement. The birds in the bush are opportunities for you to increase, and realize your full potential. If there is an opportunity for you to go into the bush and catch more birds go out there and catch as many as possible. Don’t limit yourself! If you look around, you will see that successful people are not afraid of failure. They see failure as part of the process of success. When they fail, they learn from their mistakes and move forward. John Maxwell in his book Failing Forward said “The difference between average people and achieving is their perception of and response to failure”. It is very important to understand the fact that for you to be successful in life, you must begin to see failure as an integral part of success.

Don’t Limit Yourself

Fear of failure is an attitude which put serious limitation on someone’s ability to succeed in life. Many people are struggling in life because they have allowed fear of failure to paralyze them from taking action. As a result they continually miss opportunities which could have transformed their life. They have allowed fear of failure to hold them hostage and put a barrier on their growth and achievement. Such people continue to cling on to their comfort zone instead of trying new ideas which have the potential to move them to the next great level. If you really want to succeed in life, you must begin to see failure as a temporary setback. That is how high-flyers and achievers see failure. After Thomas Edison had tried thousands of experiment on electric light bulb, he was interviewed by a young reporter who boldly asked Mr. Edison if he felt like a failure and if he thought he should just give up by now. Perplexed, Edison replied, “Young man, why would I feel like a failure? And why would I ever give up? I now know definitively over 9,000 ways that an electric light bulb will not work. Success is almost in my grasp.” And shortly after that, and over 10,000 attempts, Edison invented the light bulb. Can you see the difference? Someone was seeing failure but Edison was seeing knowledge, possibilities and solutions. Same situation, different paradigm, different result! Kyle Rote Jr said “there is no doubt in my mind that there are many ways to be a winner, but there is really only one way to be a loser and that is to fail and not look beyond the failure

Progress and Development Comes With Failure

If you are still not convinced that failure is an integral part of success in life. Let me refresh your memory with your own real life examples. You learn walking by failing, if you had stop trying when you fell while trying to walk as a little child, you would never have been able to walk today. You can ride bike today because when you failed and fell down while trying to learn you did not quit. You got up and climb the bike again. You learnt talking by failing. You learnt driving by failing. All the things you can do perfectly today were learnt by failing. Whoever has never failed before in life is actually the real failure because he wouldn’t have achieved anything. When you fail to try, you miss so many opportunities. Stop worrying about failure. Worry about the opportunities you missed when you fail to act. Most people are wallowing in poverty today because of fear of failure.

Overcoming Fear of Failure

  • The most effective way to deal with your fear is to be courageous and act! Courage is not absence of fear; it is the ability to act in the presence of fear. Everybody has the emotion of fear; however those who are courageous confront that fear and ultimately achieve their goals. The most potent antidote for dealing with fear of failure is to take the bull by the horn and confront your fear. Over time I have discovered that most of the time when you confront your fear it disappears because it is not real. If you want to achieve extra-ordinary results, you need to develop the ability to act in the presence of fear. One of the common and important traits of great achievers in life is their willingness to abandon their comfort zone to try something new. They are never comfortable with their comfort zone. They are never satisfied with the status quo. They are always willing to take risk and attempt new things even when the end result is not absolutely certain. They are never satisfied with a bird in their hand when there are several birds out there to catch.
  • Another thing you need to overcome your fear of failure is to always see failure as a learning process in your quest for success. You are not a failure until you accept defeat and quit. If you don’t fail you cannot learn. If you don’t learn you cannot know. If you don’t know you cannot act. If you don’t act you cannot succeed. When you try and fail, you don’t lose anything, you will rather gain by learning how it will not work.
