Career Success

When it comes to the issue of career success, critical factors which must be considered are:

i.)                  Discovery and Understanding of God’s purpose for your life,

ii.)                Your Dreams and Goals

iii.)              Your Actions

iv.)              Positive attitude

v.)                Competence

Discovery and Understanding of God’s purpose for your life

Every man in this world is created by God for a specific purpose in life. Consequently, He designed you to work at the optimal level when you work in harmony with His purpose for you. Hence, discovery and understanding of your purpose in life determines how far you can go in life. Failure to work in line with God’s purpose for one’s life leads to nothing but sub-optimal and mediocre performance. Most people struggle to succeed due to lack of understanding of God’s purpose for their life. For example, if you are designed to be a teacher, you can never realize your full potential if you decide to be a banker.

Your Dreams and Goals

Having discovered God’s purpose for your life, you need to have a vision of what you want to become in life. Having vision for your life will make you to be focused. Consequently, you will be able to deploy your resources efficiently and effectively. If you don’t have a vision for your life you will just be wondering about without a specific direction. In such situation, achieving success is absolutely left to chances. In addition to having vision for your life, you must set goals that will ultimately lead to realization of your dreams and vision. Your goals should be synchronized such that their achievement will move you closer to your life vision.

Your Actions

Every object continues in its state of rest or uniform motion unless it is acted upon by a force (Isaac Newton). Having set your vision and goals, you must take practical steps to achieve your goals for you to turn your dreams into reality.

Positive Attitude

Contrary to the popular opinion that attitude is everything, John Maxwell in his book “The Difference maker” said “attitude is not everything but the difference maker” I totally agree with him. As much as positive attitude has a very significant role to play in achieving success in whatever you are doing in life, it cannot take the place of other important factors. Attitude for example cannot take the place of competence. If you have a very good attitude to work but you lack competence, your boss will find it difficult to recommend you for promotion, and if you are running a business your customers will neither come back nor recommend you for their friends. On the other hand, if you are very competent but you have very bad attitude to work, you can never go far in your career or business.

Competence

Nothing can take place of competence. Take all the positive attitudes in this world and deploy them to work in pursuit of God’s purpose for your life, you aren’t going to get anywhere if you are not competent. Competence is a very important factor that should be taking seriously in your quest for success in whatever you are doing. You need to continuously update your skills through continuous learning. There are some people who have never read a single book since they left school. Reading will expose your mind and expand your thinking.

When you discover God’s purpose for your life, you will have a very clear picture of what you want to become in life and what should be done to get there. If you are engaged in what God designed you to do in life, you will achieve extraordinary results with ordinary efforts. Unfortunately, most people do not have an idea of God’s purpose for their life. Consequently, they struggle hard with little or no result to show for the efforts. It is very important to pause and take time to do a self assessment of yourself as an individual. Are you happy with your progress and achievements in your current pursuit? Do you enjoy what you are doing or are you just doing it for the salary? What is your vision for your life? Will your current pursuit lead to achievement of your vision in life? Do you have positive attitude to work? Do you have the relevant skills to do your work properly? If you discover that your current pursuit is not in line with God’s purpose for your life, you need to switch from your current career to what God specifically designed you to do in life. Pursuing God’s purpose for your life is the foundation of success, if your current pursuit is not what God designed you to do; you need to change direction no matter how far you think you have gone. It is important to realize that, no matter how far you have gone in the wrong direction, you should never hesitate to turn back because it will never lead you to the desired destination anyway. I have enjoyed reading your articles, and in a few of them I could not help but noticed you mentioned God’s purpose for your life. How will I know what his purpose is for my life?
